Ruminating on Nancy Daly and Ruminations
The Julio Fine Arts Gallery is proud to present our next featured artist, Nancy Daly. Daly is a Washington, D.C. based interdisciplinary artist. Her work aims to examine how to development of the online social world is affecting identity and social behavior. Daly earned her MFA in Photographic and Electronic Media at the Maryland Institute College of Art and holds a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Graphic Design from James Madison University. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country with 15 solo and two-person exhibitions. In addition to her artwork, Daly is the co-founder of But, Also an artist-run business dedicated to the sustaining of art practices. The business supports all aspects of artistic practices that surround the making of art.
The act of ruminating is to mediate or muse, to ponder, to brood. Daly’s exhibition, titled, Ruminations, is a series that labors over the ideas of work and time in the era of late-stage capitalism. It explores the absurdity of this era, the impulse for constant productive action, and how this changes our relationship to time. Daly’s work expresses a variety of shapes and colors, mediums, and textures. The works in Ruminations, are visualizations of time wasted.
This exhibition will be split up into two sections, “Ruminations on Work” and “Ruminations on Time.” The first section, “Ruminations on Work” could be described as sculptures that document solitary durational performances. These actions provided a productive and purposeful form of work. However, the products of said work are pointless, non-functional objects. The actions are documented and presented as complete objects which represent a specific period of time. The second section, “Ruminations on Time” consists of only a single piece. This piece is called, “Melt: Still Life with Ice Cream Sandwich.” This piece acts as a reminder of our relationship with time. It shows a video of an ice cream sandwich melt over the course of eight hours. It is conveying a message that it might be more difficult to contemplate our own mortality if the food substances around us don’t behave how they should.
The exhibition will run from March 3 to April 7, 2022. In addition, there is a free public artist talk preceding the exhibition on March 1 entitled “Ruminations on Ruminations” at 6:30PM at the Black Box Theatre in Loyola’s College Center building. During this time, Daly will discuss her upcoming exhibition and residency. There will be a closing reception on March 31, from 5-8PM. **Note that properly fitted masks will be required at all times in the gallery—please help us keep everyone safe and healthy!
