Artist Statement

“I once learned, and never forgot that “fashion is walking art.” This turned into a philosophy of mine and in the coming years since learning that, I always wanted to involve some aspect of fashion into my art.

These pieces delve into my mind and what occupies it most. What is consuming my consciousness? Is it fashion, something that has, from a young age, occupied my thoughts even when I did not know what it truly meant? Fashion, that expresses my internal thoughts as a vessel, something I was driven to pursue as a career from the moment I learned how to draw? Or is it the subconscious, where the ideas I internalize manifest themselves into dreams - dreams that are almost always vivid and that I have recorded for years.

How do dreams function as a tool for creative thinking or artistic inspiration? It offers a way to create something different. A method to surprise yourself, or a way to access originality. If you designed a fashion show inspired by your dreams, what would it look like? This is my interpretation.”

About the Artist

From Valley Stream, New York, Kristen Richards is a Communications and Studio Art Interdisciplinary Major at Loyola University Maryland. From childhood, Kristen has always enjoyed the arts from self-taught drawing to art classes in school. As she became more versed with various different types of media at Loyola, Kristen has taken a liking to ink wash, charcoal, and acrylic paints. Her work combines her affinity to fashion and scenes from some of her unique and vivid personal dreams. She also enjoys working with Adobe Suite as well, which differs from her physical art, showcasing a more minimal, but colorful, aesthetic.

For four years at Loyola, Kristen has participated in the annual Black Student Association Fashion Show, three years as a model, and one year as a scene leader. For her future artistic endeavors, Kristen hopes to continue to utilize all that she learned at Loyola and apply it to her work in the fashion industry.
